AAA LOWER STATE REPORT

By Stephen C. Sutusky

Several Midland schools opened the 2002-03 wrestling season last week.  Brookland-Cayce and Newberry wrestled last Tuesday with BC winning 63-18.  On the same night Dreher defeated 4A rival Airport 39-34.  Over the weekend Brookland-Cayce finished 12th at the Irmo Palmetto Classic, while A.C. Flora and Dreher finished 15th and 16th respectively.  Brookland-Cayce and Dreher each had one wrestler in the finals.  160 pound wrestlers’ Rorey Garnett (BC) and Michael Hood (Dreher) continued their classic battles in the championship round with Garnett earning a three point decision.

The AAA Lower State picture should become a lot clearer this weekend as the North Myrtle Beach Tournament takes place.  A.C Flora and Dreher both will travel to the coast to wrestle the schools from the Grand Strand area.  Brookland-Cayce will wrestle at the Taco Bell Invitational at Spring Valley.  Among the AAA teams wrestling in Myrtle Beach this weekend should be: North Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach, Georgetown, Dreher, AC Flora, Carolina Forest, and Lake City.  This topnotch AAA competition should be the focus of the next column.  Anyone with Lower State scores or news can email me at ssutusky@sc.rr.com
