AAAA Upper State Wrestling Window

            The Bearcat Invitational saw 9 of the 20 Upper State AAAA schools competing against each other.  This really helped clear, and fog up the picture individually.  Big upsets included Anthony Miller’s (Byr) close decision over Craig Albers (FM).  Pressley (Spart) defeated Miller in the finals.  This big surprise comes a week after Albers defeated SV’s Kuhn.  The 171 pound weight class has these four wrestlers battling it out, and I can see all four having an equal shot at the Upper State title in AAAA.  Byrnes’ freshman phenom Brantley Hooks continues to impress.  Weight class 119 is starting to show depth, with RV’s Marcus Bostic and FM’s Mitchell Alston breaking into the picture.  RH’s Chris Jackson had a disappointing Bearcat 1-2 record.  Michael Franks (Lau) looks like the top man at 125 with Knox (NW) totally dominating 130.  Dee Templeton (FM) pulled the surprise of the week, escaping the Bearcat with a pin in the finals.            Weight class 140 at the Bearcat seemed to be loaded, but the lower state’s TJ Selke (DF) solidly defeated JJ Davis (Byr).  At 145, Jason Starnes (RH) seemed to have a tough weekend, I expect him to regroup this next month and have a strong showing in February.  Nazionale (RV) took out Byrnes’ Azumendi in the finals.  At 160 Hillcrest’s Jack Jenkins placed third, loosing to an Eastside wrestler by a couple points in the championship semi-finals.  Jenkins has plenty of potential as a first year wrestler.  At 189 RH’s Michael Grase gave up a lead in the finals and was stuck by a Weddington (NC) wrestler as time was running out.  At 215 Barton (SP) and Sabath (FM) had a great consolation finals match, with Barton obtaining the winning takedown in overtime.  Heavyweight continues to be a weak weight class for the Upper State.
